Jacaranda is a highly contemporary house, bold and quite exotic in concept and aligned so that every room, with huge sliding windows, overlooks amazing sea views. Luxuriously comfortable and unashamedly modern, it includes some very unusual features in its design and decoration.
From the moment you arrive at Jacaranda, you are struck by a sense of drama. The access path and steps are flanked by a spectacular cascade of water, illuminated at night, defined by four sandstone pillars and arches from Rajahstan. Standing before the carved wood front doors that once graced an Indian temple, a glance to the left takes in the broad teak deck terrace with the two tall palm trees from Egypt. Relaxing here amidst cushioned comfort, it would be easy to surrender to the illusion of flying through the air on a magic carpet, with the sea streaming past below you. On this level too is the swimming pool terrace where a sense of Far Eastern exoticism prevails. An enigmatically smiling Buddha from Jaipur reclines in a thatched pergola where cushioned benches invite guests to join him in admiring the sublime views. Another pergola houses a suspended day bed, and above the pool area a high-level walkway, draped in vines, runs the length of the pool area with two beautiful purple jacaranda trees above.
The villa is decorated with colours from a muted palette, the perfect background to some striking pieces of Indian sculpture and examples of modern art and photography. Views are all-important, and many of the walls, even in two of the shower rooms, are made of glass to permit uninterrupted views of sea and sky, the coastline of both Corfu and Albania, and of the beaches below the house. The windows of the three master double bedrooms feature electrically-controlled curtains, and drawing them back at night from the comfort of your bed reveals the breathtaking splendour of the night sky over Corfu.
The ground floor is dedicated to an ultra-modern kitchen, a beautiful living-room presided over by a complacent Buddha and a stunning master double bedroom suite that occupies the whole of one wing of the ground floor, with a huge modern four-poster bed and a bathroom where water runs – purely for decoration! – Down one wall at the press of a switch, and where a wet room has ‘his-and-hers’ showers and TV screens mounted in the wall itself. The bath is a work of art – egg-shaped, stone, of a type to be found only in the world’s most exclusive spas, standing in the centre of the room before the curtain of water.
The visual relationship between glass and water is a recurring feature in the design of the villa. This is particularly well-illustrated when you ascend the stairs that lead up to the upper floor and pass before a window that looks into a dramatic fissure, discovered in the rock during excavation, complete with stalactites.
The four guest bedrooms all have en suite shower rooms and open on to the covered verandah that follows the curve of the house. Views are once again magnificent and each room has its own outside furniture with which to relax and make the most of the sun and view. This floor also has separate access to the outside of the villa and to the swimming pool, there is a pool table at this level too, out of doors and protected by its own thatched pergola overlooking the pool.
At Jacaranda, just as much thought has gone into the layout of the outdoor areas as to the interior. To one side of the house is a bar, partly covered and with seating, tucked into a sheltered corner of a stone terrace. On a slightly lower level is a very well equipped BBQ and dinning pergola. The other side of the house is dominated by the large swimming pool which can be heated if required and has its own sound system with underwater speakers and a most convenient outdoor dining area slotted between the pool and the kitchen.
A short walk along the estate driveway brings you to the private pathway that connects with the public coastal path and the beaches of Krouzeri and Kaminaki. There is a full-sized tennis court on the estate, use of which is shared with the other two villas.
Luxurious and imaginative in concept, Jacaranda lives up to its dramatic first impression.
